BOE races are non-partisan and so is HOPE. The recommendation below is for District 3 for the Nov 7, 2006 election.
District 3 comprises Butler, Miami, Montgomery, and part of Darke County.
Uphoff or Gunlock
Sadly, former representative John Griffin died earlier this year. He was replaced in August by Thomas W. Gunlock of Dayton. Gunlock is director of marketing for RG Properties, Inc. He has been a teacher and football coach at both the high school and college levels.
Remember, most Ohio taxpayers can get a taxCREDIT of $50 ($100 for married filing jointly) when you donate to state Board of Ed candidates.

Mr Gunlock attended his first meeting as a representative in September. In October he voting with the 14-3 majority to relieve the achievement committee of any responsibility to replace the creationism removed from ohio's curriculum in February 2006. He has indicated he has no intention of entertaining discussion of a place in the curriculum for "intelligent design" or other faith-based alternatives to evolution until after all school districts in Ohio receive a rating of "excellent."
In the field of 4, two candidates clearly stand out, Gunlock and James Uphoff.
Dr Uphoff is an education professor whose research centers on early childhood. he is president of the Oakwood School Board, and former president of the Ohio School Boards Assn. He has indicated support for good science education and would bring a wealth of experience to the board.
